Below are select notes that CharityWatch believes may be of interest to donors.

CharityWatch's rating of JDRF International includes the financial activities of the JDRF Chapters located throughout the United States and JDRF T1D Fund LLC (The Fund), formerly JDRF Therapeutics Fund LLC. All significant inter-company balances and transactions have been eliminated in the audit consolidation.


According to the JDRF International consolidated audit of June 30, 2019 (Note 1, Organization):

"...The purpose of The Fund is to materially accelerate the development of drugs, devices, diagnostics, and vaccines to treat, prevent, and cure T1D [Type 1 Diabetes]..." 


Not included in the JDRF International rating are the JDRF international affiliates located "in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and several other countries. The financial statements of these international affiliates are not included in the accompanying [audited] consolidated financial statements since JDRF does not exercise control over their management or operations. However, international affiliates do provide contributions to JDRF to support funding of research grants as presented in note 10," according to Note 1 of the consolidated audit. JDRF International received approximately $6.98 million in contributions from international affiliates in fiscal 2019, according to Note 10.

According to the JDRF International tax filing for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019, JDRF reports receiving in-kind donations of miscellaneous auction items on which it placed a value of approximately $12.8 million (IRS Form 990, Schedule M).

According to the JDRF International consolidated audit of June 30, 2019 (Note 12(a), Commitments and Contingencies, Research Grants):

JDRF had "conditional research grants commitments, including milestone contracts," of approximately $90,101,000 as of June 30, 2019. The conditional research grants will be recognized in JDRF's consolidated financial statements "when the conditions have been substantially met."

According to the JDRF International tax filing for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019, JDRF reports re: Compensation, Supplemental Information (IRS Form 990, Schedule J, Part III):

Regarding non-fixed payments to officers, directors, trustees, key employees and highest compensated employees (Schedule J, Part I, Line 7):

"JDRF awards non-fixed payments such as bonuses on a discretionary basis tied to the employees [sic] performance. The names of employees and the amounts that were paid are found on Schedule J, Page 2, Part II, Col. (B) (II) [Bonus & incentive compensation]."

JDRF reports "Bonus & incentive compensation" payments to eight individuals in calendar year 2018. The payments range from $188,750 to $65,000. Jonathan R. Behr, Managing Director JDRF T1D Fund, received the $188,750; his reported total compensation in 2018 is $550,987. The second highest payment is $175,000, received by Derek Rapp, President & CEO; his reported total compensation in 2018 is $849,089 (IRS Form 990, Schedule J, Part II).


Regarding severance payments to officers, directors, trustees, key employees and highest compensated employees (Schedule J, Part I, Line 4A):

"Mark Greene received a severance payment of $186,250 which is reported on Schedule J, Part II, Col. (B)(III) Other reportable compensation."

Mark Greene is reported as former CFO & Assistant Treasurer, through 5/2018; his reported total compensation in calendar year 2018 is $356,571 (IRS Form 990, Schedule J, Part II).
