CharityWatch Analysts perform an in-depth analysis of charities' audited financial statements and IRS tax filings, and often review other documents such as state filings, annual reports, and fundraising contracts during their evaluations. Below are select notes that CharityWatch believes may be of interest to donors.

According to the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice audit of June 30, 2020 (Note 13, Fiscal Sponsorship):

"Astraea is the fiscal sponsor of International Trans Fund, Lesbians Who Tech, The Pipeline Project, and The UHAI: East African Sexual Health and Rights Initiative. Astraea retains a portion of funds raised toward these sponsored projects to cover its administrative costs. The net assets for these sponsored projects are reflected in the accompanying [audited] financial statements as net assets with donor restrictions."

[CharityWatch's fiscal 2020 rating of Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice includes the financial activities of Astraea's sponsored projects listed above in Note 13.]

According to the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice audited Statement of Activities for the year ended June 30, 2020, Astraea reports receiving in-kind contributions on which it placed a total value of $10,015,800. The in-kind contributions received represented "donated program costs by implementing partners in connection with the [LGBTI Global Human Rights] Partnership Program," according to Note 14 of the Astraea fiscal 2020 audit.

[Note: CharityWatch generally excludes the value of in-kind (non-cash) donations of goods and services from its calculations of Program % and Cost to Raise $100. More information on how grades are calculated and the treatment of in-kind donations can be found on the Our Process page.]

According to the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice audit of June 30, 2020 (Note 12, Loan Payable – Paycheck Protection Program):

"On May 1, 2020, Astraea received a loan totaling $617,468 under the Paycheck Protection Program administered by the U.S. Small Business Administration. The loan bears interest at 1% per annum, is due on April 8, 2022 and may be forgiven if Astraea meets certain retention requirements and the funds are used for eligible expenses. On July 28, 2021, the entire loan was forgiven."

According to the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice audit of June 30, 2020 (Note 17, Risks and Uncertainties):

"In March 2020, the United States declared the global pandemic COVID-19 outbreak a national emergency. A foundation relief grant in the amount of $10,000 and loan proceeds of $617,468 have been received under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act... Management has revised the financial forecast to reduce expanses relative to expected revenue that will enable Astraea to operate for a prolonged period of economic uncertainty and deferred programs. With these steps and continuing oversight, management believes that its resources are sufficient to sustain ongoing operations."
