CharityWatch Analysts perform an in-depth analysis of charities' audited financial statements and IRS tax filings, and often review other documents such as state filings, annual reports, and fundraising contracts during their evaluations. Below are select notes that CharityWatch believes may be of interest to donors.

According to the Team Rubicon audit of December 31, 2022 (Note 9 re: In-Kind Contributions), Team Rubicon received in-kind contributed goods and services in 2022 on which it placed a total value of approximately $61 million. Of this amount, approximately $52.5 million consisted of "Branding and Communication."

[Note: CharityWatch generally treats donated securities as cash, and generally excludes the value of in-kind (non-cash) donations of goods and services from its calculations of Program % and Cost to Raise $100. More information on how grades are calculated and the treatment of in-kind donations can be found on the Our Process page.]

According to the Team Rubicon 2022 tax filing, Team Rubicon reports re: Business Transactions Involving Interested Persons a transaction in the amount of $67,273 involving Sarah Lenger, "sister of the President/Chief Executive Officer, Jake Wood." The transaction is described as: "The organization paid fees for graphic design services" (IRS Form 990, Schedule L, Parts IV & V).

According to the Team Rubicon audit of December 31, 2022 (Note 12, Paycheck Protection Program Loan):

"In January 2021, Team Rubicon received a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan in the amount of $2,523,312. The PPP loan, administered by the Small Business Administration (SBA), bears interest at a fixed rate of 1% per annum, has a term of five years, and is unsecured and guaranteed by the SBA. Interest accrues on the loan beginning with the initial disbursement; however, payments of principal and interest are deferred until the lender's determination of the amount of forgiveness applied for by the borrower is approved by the SBA. To the extent that all or part of the PPP loan is not forgiven, Team Rubicon will be required to pay interest on the PPP loan as a rate of 1% per annum. The terms of the PPP loan provide for customary events of default, including, among other things, payment defaults, breach of representations and warranties, and insolvency events.

In June 2023, the full amount of the PPP loan and incurred interest was forgiven. Accordingly, Team Rubicon will recognize loan forgiveness income of $2,523,312 for the year ending December 31, 2023."

According to the Team Rubicon 2022 tax filing, Team Rubicon reports re: Compensation, Supplemental Information (IRS Form 990, Schedule J, Part III):

Regarding nonfixed payments to officers, directors, trustees, key employees and highest compensated employees (Schedule J, Part I, Line 7):

"Non fixed payments included discretionary annual performance based bonuses. The board approves the bonus pool each year."

Team Rubicon reports "Bonus & incentive compensation" payments to seven individuals in 2022, including $65,182 and $56,342 paid to David Burke, Chief Program Officer, and Arthur DelaCruz, President/Chief Operating Officer, respectively. Their reported total compensation in 2022 is $332,199 and $395,316, respectively. The other five individuals received "Bonus & incentive compensation" payments ranging from $10,762 to $28,004, with reported total compensation in 2022 ranging from $188,875 to $332,263 (IRS Form 990, Schedule J, Part II).
