Hurricane Ian slammed into the southwestern coast of Florida on September 28th, 2022, as a major Category 4 storm. Ian will go down as one of the most powerful storms in U.S. history. It destroyed homes and businesses and caused what Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described as a "500-year flood event." As of Thursday, September 29th, 2022, Ian has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm. It continues to barrel across Florida causing epic flooding over east-central areas of the state. The National Hurricane Center warns that Ian could "produce life-threatening flooding, storm surge and gusty winds across portions of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas." Almost 2.6 million homes and businesses are currently without power. The full and lasting impact of Tropical Storm Ian may not be known for several weeks.
