Below are select notes that CharityWatch believes may be of interest to donors.

CharityWatch's rating of Cancer Care also includes the financial activities of Cancer Care Co-Payment Assistance Foundation, which are consolidated in the Cancer Care audited financial statements for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2021. Each entity is organized as a 501(c)(3) public charity. All intercompany transactions have been eliminated in the audit consolidation.


According to the Cancer Care consolidated audit of June 30, 2021 (Note 1 re: Organization):

"On July 23, 2007, Cancer Care incorporated the Cancer Care Co-Payment Assistance Foundation, Inc. (the Co-Pay Foundation)... The primary function of the Co-Pay Foundation is to provide financial assistance to individuals with cancer in the form of copayment assistance for both prescribed treatment and supporting medications, premium assistance, or other direct financial assistance in order to ensure access to care, treatment, and prescribed medications."

According to the Cancer Care consolidated audit of June 30, 2021 (Note 1(d) re: Contributions), the Organization reports receiving approximately $69.0 million in "Contributions from the five largest donors," representing 77% of total contributions, in fiscal 2021.

According to the Cancer Care consolidated audit of June 30, 2021 (Note 1(e) re: Contributed Goods and Services), Cancer Care received contributed goods and services in fiscal 2021 on which it placed a total value of $1,938,492.

According to the Cancer Care consolidated audit of June 30, 2021 (Note 11, Payroll Protection Program Refundable Advance):

"On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization designated COVID-19 as a pandemic. In April 2020, the Organization received funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act through the Payroll Protection Program. Funding through this program consists of loans that are designed to provide a direct incentive for small businesses to keep their workers on payroll. These loans will be forgiven if certain criteria are met and the funds are used for eligible expenses.

"The Organization applied for and received a Payroll Protection Program Loan in April 2020 in the amount of $1,861,575. Any portion of the loan that is not forgiven will be assessed at a 1% interest rate payable over a five-year period. The loan is recorded in the [audited] consolidated balance sheet in Payroll Protection Program refundable advance as of June 30, 2021. The Organization applied for complete forgiveness in accordance with the provisions for loan forgiveness in July 2021 and the application for forgiveness was approved in September 2021."

According to the Cancer Care consolidated audit of June 30, 2021 (Note 12, COVID-19 Impact):

"As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic uncertainties have arisen, which may negatively affect the balance sheet, results of operations, and cash flows of the Organization. The duration of these uncertainties and the ultimate financial effects cannot be reasonably estimated at this time."

According to the Cancer Care tax filing for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2021, Cancer Care reports re: Compensation, Supplemental Information (IRS Form 990, Schedule J, Part III):

Regarding nonfixed payments to officers, directors, trustees, key employees and highest compensated employees (Schedule J, Part I, line 7):

"The organization from time-to-time will make performance-based bonus payments. For key employees those amounts are determined in conjunction with the president of the board and executive committee. Key employees may award bonuses, within the parameters of the organization's human resources compensation program, to staff. In limited amounts all employees are eligible for years of service bonuses when reaching service levels in 5-year increments."


Cancer Care reports "Bonus & incentive compensation" payments to six individuals in calendar year 2020, including $65,000 and $40,250 to Patricia Goldsmith, Chief Executive Officer, and Christine Verini, Chief Operating Officer, respectively. Their reported total compensation in 2020 is $458,422 and $396,720, respectively. In addition, one individual received "Bonus & incentive compensation" in the amount of $20,000, and the remaining three individuals received "Bonus & incentive compensation" that ranged from $5,250 to $1,000. The reported total compensation in 2020 for those four individuals ranged from $348,228 to $209,534 (IRS Form 990, Schedule J, Part II).
