CharityWatch Analysts perform an in-depth analysis of charities' audited financial statements and IRS tax filings, and often review other documents such as state filings, annual reports, and fundraising contracts during their evaluations. Below are select notes that CharityWatch believes may be of interest to donors.

According to the Brother's Brother Foundation 2022 tax filing, the Foundation reports receiving in-kind donated goods on which it placed a total value of $102,945,074, including $101,375,498 in "Drugs and medical supplies" (IRS Form 990, Schedule M).

[Note: CharityWatch generally excludes the value of in-kind (non-cash) donations of goods and services from its calculations of Program % and Cost to Raise $100. More information on how grades are calculated and the treatment of in-kind donations can be found on the Our Process page.]

In addition, according to the Brother's Brother Foundation audit of December 31, 2022 (Note 2, Summary of Significant Accounting Policies, Inventory):

"Inventory consists of undistributed in-kind materials at year-end. The Foundation receives a substantial amount of in-kind goods from various regional and national donors, primarily consisting of medical and educational materials. These materials are included in the [audited] financial statements at amounts that approximate net realizable value on the date of donation. ... During 2022 and 2021, inventory adjustments based on the net realizable value at the date of donation related mostly to the Foundation's planned decision to destroy medical supplies believed not suitable for distribution, and totaled approximately $100,000 and $600,000, respectively..."

According to the Brother's Brother Foundation audit of December 31, 2022 (Note 13, Governmental Grants):

"The Foundation was a recipient of a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan with Key Bank of approximately $380,000 granted by the Small Business Administration (SBA) under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), which was reflected as deferred grant revenue as of December 31, 2020. The PPP loan was evidenced by promissory note bearing interest at a fixed annual rate of 1.00%, with the first six months of interest deferred. The PPP loan was unsecured and guaranteed by the United States SBA. Under the program terms, PPP loans are forgiven and recognized as grant revenue if the loan proceeds are used to maintain compensation costs and employee headcount, and other qualifying expenses (mortgage interest, rent and utilities) incurred following receipt of the loan. The PPP loan was fully forgiven in 2021 and was recognized as revenue on the statements of activities and changes in net assets."

According to the Brother's Brother Foundation 2022 tax filing, the Foundation reports re: Compensation, Supplemental Information (IRS Form 990, Schedule J, Part III):

Regarding nonfixed payments to officers, directors, trustees, key employees and highest compensated employees (Schedule J, Part I, Line 7):

"Bonus awards are related to individual performance and are determined by the executive committee of the Board of Trustees."

The Foundation reports "Bonus and incentive compensation" payments to one individual in calendar year 2022. The "Bonus and incentive compensation" amounts include $15,000, paid to the President, Ozzy A. Samad, who earned $185,470 in total compensation in 2022.
