How is CharityWatch Supported?

CharityWatch is considered the most stringent watchdog in the nonprofit sector. Over 95% of our funding comes from small donations from the general public. We are not a nonprofit trade association in name or in action. Our charity ratings are not crowdsourced from the charities we report on, nor are they the result of algorithms designed to repeat favorable financial or "impact" information charities report about themselves. By not charging the charities we rate or relying on industry insiders to fund our work, we can maintain our independence and continue providing you with the information you need to make informed giving decisions.

Why Support CharityWatch?

CharityWatch is one of the few truly independent sources of in-depth charity ratings and nonprofit reporting designed to help you and other donors make wise giving decisions. You can play a part in ensuring that CharityWatch has the funding we need to continue our important work.

Support to Journalists

CharityWatch regularly partners with journalists working nationally, regionally, and locally to contribute in-depth financial analysis and other expertise to their investigations into wrongdoing at charities. For 30 years, CharityWatch has also provided thoughtful commentary to hundreds of media outlets on issues affecting the nonprofit sector.

Library of Original Articles

CharityWatch researches, writes, publishes, and distributes original articles on wrongdoing in the nonprofit sector, misleading financial reporting tricks, tips for giving wisely, synopses of lawsuits involving charities, and general nonprofit news.

Charity Ratings on an “A+” to "F" Scale

CharityWatch works to uncover and report on wrongdoing in the nonprofit sector by conducting in-depth analyses of the audited financial statements, tax forms, fundraising contracts, privacy policies, & other reporting of nonprofits. We analyze financial efficiency, governance, salaries, and other data and issue charity ratings on an "A+" to "F" scale.

Charity Rating Guide & Watchdog Report

CharityWatch publishes a biannual Charity Rating Guide & Watchdog Report for donors who lack reliable access to the internet or who otherwise prefer to consume information in a tangible medium. The Guide represents a condensed version of CharityWatch's work as published on charitywatch.org.
