CharityWatch Analysts perform an in-depth analysis of charities' audited financial statements and IRS tax filings, and often review other documents such as state filings, annual reports, and fundraising contracts during their evaluations. Below are select notes that CharityWatch believes may be of interest to donors.

CharityWatch is unable to provide a financial efficiency rating for MD Anderson Cancer Center due to differences in the financial reporting requirements applicable to governmental entities. For this reason we have designated MD Anderson Cancer Center as “NR,” or Not Ratable by CharityWatch. This should not be perceived as either a positive or negative rating.

MD Anderson is a governmental entity within The University of Texas System and prepares its audited financial statements in accordance with accounting standards established by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). CharityWatch's financial efficiency methodology is designed primarily for nongovernmental nonprofit organizations that prepare their financial statements under Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) standards.

Although MD Anderson publishes audited financial statements, its financial reporting does not include a functional expense statement allocating expenses among program services, management and general, and fundraising in a manner that allows CharityWatch to calculate our Program Percentage and Cost to Raise $100 consistently and comparably with the other nonprofit organizations we rate. As a result, CharityWatch is unable to provide a financial efficiency rating for MD Anderson.

However, CharityWatch is able to provide compensation data for MD Anderson Cancer Center. CharityWatch obtained the fiscal 2025 Administrative Accountability Report. The report discloses compensation for the institution's senior executives, vice presidents, associate vice presidents, division heads, deans, and other administrative leaders, identifying each individual by name and position. It also itemizes non-salary compensation, including bonuses, practice plan payments, benefits, allowances, and other compensation such as deferred compensation and incentive payments, to produce a total compensation figure.

CharityWatch sent letters to MD Anderson Cancer Center's institutional address and P.O. Box on September 18, 2026, requesting a pro-forma copy of its IRS Form 990 (if available), and responses related to our Governance and Transparency Benchmarks if a pro-forma copy of its IRS Form 990 did not exist. As of October 6, 2026, the organization has not responded to our request.
