CharityWatch Analysts perform an in-depth analysis of charities' audited financial statements and IRS tax filings, and often review other documents such as state filings, annual reports, and fundraising contracts during their evaluations. Below are select notes that CharityWatch believes may be of interest to donors.

CharityWatch's rating of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) is for the national office of BBBSA (tax ID #23-1365190) and the BBBSA Charitable Foundation (tax ID #92-0426088) and does not include the financial activities of the BBBSA local affiliates or affiliated agencies.

According to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America audit of June 30, 2025 (Note 1 re: Organization):

"...The Organization works closely with Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies ('local agencies' or 'affiliated agencies') throughout the country to implement its programs. These agencies are separate legal entities, which are not controlled by the Organization, and are therefore not consolidated within the Organization's financial statements.

Effective June 25, 2021, BBBSA formed the BBBSA Charitable Fund, LLC ('LLC'). The LLC was formed to create an endowment with a portion of the gift from Mackenize Scott as well as other funds held in investments for BBBSA. The purpose of the LLC is to build a long-term strategy to support the mission of BBBSA. As BBBSA is the sole equity member of the LLC, it is consolidated within the BBBSA financial statements."

According to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) audit of June 30, 2025 (Note 1 re: In-Kind Contributions), BBBSA received in-kind "contributed advertising time and printing to promote its mission" in fiscal 2025 on which it placed a value of $2,283,557. In addition, BBBSA "recognized in-kind rental expense of $83,105" in fiscal 2025.

[Note: CharityWatch generally excludes the value of in-kind (non-cash) donations of goods and services from its calculations of Program % and Cost to Raise $100. More information on how grades are calculated and the treatment of in-kind donations can be found on the Our Process page.]
