Hispanic Heritage Month is a yearly celebration of the history and culture of U.S Latino and Hispanic communities. This year Hispanic Heritage Month is from Friday, September 15^th through Sunday, October 15^th. Hispanic Heritage Month highlights how Latino and Hispanic communities have influenced and contributed to American society.

Hispanic Heritage Month began in June 1968 as a commemorative week that was introduced by California Congressman George E. Brown. Later that year Congress passed an official law authorizing and requesting the president to issue an annual proclamation declaring September 15^th and 16^th as the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Week. From 1968 until 1988 every U.S. president issued the yearly proclamation setting aside a week to honor Hispanic Americans. In 1989, George W. Bush became the first president to declare the 31-day period from September 15^th to October 15^th as National Hispanic Heritage Month.
