Taking From The Hungry To Feed The Starving: Crisis in Yemen

   Mar 18, 2022
CharityWatch announces a list of legitimate, efficient, and accountable charities providing humanitarian aid to the people of Yemen

As public attention and charitable donations have shifted from famine and crises in other parts of the world to the war in Ukraine, charities have been forced to make impossible choices about how to allocate their limited funding towards humanitarian efforts in different regions. When speaking about the hunger crisis in Yemen, World Food Program Executive Director, David Beasley, said: "We have no choice but to take food from the hungry to feed the starving, and unless we receive immediate funding, in a few weeks we risk not even being able to feed the starving. This will be hell on earth."

In 2014 civil war erupted in Yemen and since then the country has remained in a continuous state of conflict. Yemen is the world's largest humanitarian crisis and one of its worst. It is estimated that 70% of the total population, or 20.7 million people including 11.3 million children, are in need of humanitarian assistance and live in poverty and deprivation. Historically, Yemen has been known as the Middle East's most poverty-stricken country.

Yemen's health system has been on the brink of collapse for years and as of 2021 only 50% of health facilities were fully functioning and those that are still open lack staff, basic medicines, equipment and other essential supplies. The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted an already faltering healthcare system.

The persistent conflict is ravaging the country of Yemen and its people. The citizens of Yemen continue to need immediate and ongoing support and assistance.

The charities listed below are Top-Rated by CharityWatch for spending at least 75% of their cash budgets on programs; for maintaining fundraising efficiency of $25 or less to raise each $100 in cash donations; and for meeting CharityWatch's governance & transparency benchmarks
