CharityWatch Analysts perform an in-depth analysis of charities' audited financial statements and IRS tax filings, and often review other documents such as state filings, annual reports, and fundraising contracts during their evaluations. Below are select notes that CharityWatch believes may be of interest to donors.

According to The Sikh Coalition audit of December 31, 2021 (Note 5, Donated Services), the Coalition reports receiving in-kind donated services in 2021 on which it placed a total value of $629,857. The donated services are from law firms that were "engaged...on a pro bono basis for a variety of different reasons, but primarily in defense of Sikh's rights through legal services and advocacy."

[Note: CharityWatch generally excludes the value of in-kind (non-cash) donations of goods and services from its calculations of Program % and Cost to Raise $100. More information on how grades are calculated and the treatment of in-kind donations can be found on the Our Process page.]

According to The Sikh Coalition 2021 tax filing, the Coalition reports re: the existence of a family or business relationship among officers, directors, trustees, or key employees (IRS Form 990, Schedule O re: Part VI, Section A, line 2):

"Prabhjot Singh and Harpreet Singh, both board members, are brothers. Narinder Singh, board chair, is the brother-in-law of Prabhjot Singh and Harpreet Singh."

The Sikh Coalition reports having eight board members in 2021. In addition to being a board member, Prabhjot Singh is reported as Treasurer (IRS Form 990, Part VII, Section A).

According to The Sikh Coalition audit of December 31, 2021 (Note 13, PPP Loan):

"In May 2020, the Coalition was granted a loan in the amount of $262,001, pursuant to the Paycheck Protection Program (the 'PPP') under...the CARES [Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security] Act, which was enacted March 27, 2020. The loan matures after two years and bears interest at a rate of 1% per annum, payable monthly after six months. Funds from the loan may be used for payroll costs, health care benefits, mortgage payments, rent, utilities, and interest on other debt obligations incurred after February 15, 2020. Under the terms of the PPP, certain amounts of the loan may be forgiven if they are used for qualifying expenses as described in the CARES Act. The Coalition received forgiveness on the loan in May 2021.

"The Coalition opted to treat the loan as a conditional contribution received in 2020. Subsequently, the proceeds were recognized as contribution revenue as of December 31, 2020 since the conditions were substantially met."

According to The Sikh Coalition audit of December 31, 2021 (Note 16, COVID-19):

"The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in substantial volatility in global financial markets. As a result, the 2021 and 2020 special events were cancelled. As the outbreak continues, the Coalition may experience a disruption in operations as well as a decline in contributions received or level of contributions and fair value of investments. Due to changing market conditions, an estimate amount of the total loss due to the outbreak, if any, cannot be determined at this time."
