82% $11
Accounting rules allow charities to report some telemarketing, direct mail, and other solicitation costs as Program expenses. CharityWatch believes that most donors do not consider a charity's solicitation activities to be the Programs they are intending to support with their donations. We therefore adjust such expenses out of a charity's reported Program expense and add it to Fundraising expense prior to calculating its rating.

CharityWatch Analysts perform an in-depth analysis of charities' audited financial statements and IRS tax filings, and often review other documents such as state filings, annual reports, and fundraising contracts during their evaluations. Below are select notes that CharityWatch believes may be of interest to donors.

CharityWatch's rating of Lupus Foundation of America is based on our analysis of the fiscal 2022 audited financial statements and IRS Form 990 tax filing of the national office (tax ID #43-1131436). These documents do not include the financial activities of the local chapters of the organization.

According to the Lupus Foundation of America audit of September 30, 2022 (Note 1 re: Organization, Network Support and Services):

"The Foundation's national network is composed of chapters, regional offices, community ambassadors and local support groups located across the United States. As a united force, the national network supports a nationwide movement to solve the cruel mystery of lupus and improve the quality of life for all people who suffer from its impact.

"As separate legal entities, chapters elect their own board of directors and maintain separate sets of financial accounts; therefore, the accompanying [audited] financial statements [of the Foundation] do not include the accounts of the chapters."

According to the Lupus Foundation of America audit of September 30, 2022 (Note 1 re: Contributed Nonfinancial Assets and Services), the Foundation reports receiving in-kind donated services in fiscal 2022 on which it placed a total value of $1,122,342. Of this amount, an estimated $1,095,529 consisted of donated advertising.

[Note: CharityWatch generally excludes the value of in-kind (non-cash) donations of goods and services from its calculations of Program % and Cost to Raise $100. More information on how grades are calculated and the treatment of in-kind donations can be found on the Our Process page.]
